TV, Movies and DVDs
So, are you planning to see anything soon? And what have you seen lately? Did you like it? Why or why not? Do you think it was compatitable with a modern feminist interpretation of communist dogma or did the juxtaposition of gay amazon tribesmen with monogamous penguins seem gratuitous? ...just kidding

I fiannly got round to seeing SAW a few weeks ago. Wasn't a shabby thriller at all.
Then I saw "Signs" wow I didn't think acting could be more wooden. I like fairy penguins, the trick is to steam them. |

I didn't mind Signs - mostly because thought it was one of the best conceived films he had managed since 6th Sense - acting aside it was certainly better than The Village and Unbreakable. I liked the way the ending brought everything together and you could accept the implications or not.
J Phoenix usually seems 'wooden' to me. An actor as his best playing the slightly repressed. ACT Pressganger (Currently in Canada) The 5 Rules of pg5 1. Thou shalt not whine. 2. I liked 6th Sense, Signs just didnt grab me it was a touch predictable for me as well as Im no the biggest Mel G fan.
I did manage to get the 1st half of the second season of Battlestar galactica on DVD and also have the second half on my PC. Thats an awesome show. I like fairy penguins, the trick is to steam them. |

Oooh - I may need to edit the thread title to include TV.
BSG has been annoying the Hell out of me. SO close to greatness, but instead they fall into soap opera and use lazy political/religious mishmash ratehr than producing a coherant macro-plot that makes sense. For example, it seems very clear that the cylons could wipe them out pretty much anytime, but for 'political/religious mishmash' reasons they keep the humans alive. I also think it needed more/better action. BSG came SO close to greatness, but so far at least its no Bab5. ACT Pressganger (Currently in Canada) The 5 Rules of pg5 1. Thou shalt not whine. 2. They make the reasons for the need to keep some humans alive clear in the second season. You also get an idea of the factions within the cylons this season (if they EVER air it in Australia). This is made clearer in Season 2, it's more of a space opera rather than a traditional Sci fi. I get my Trad Sci Fi from Stargate (season 9 was a bit slow) and Atlantis (which wasn't too shabby this season). |

Some movies I saw on the plane:
History of Violence - not as good as the hype... acting was great, as was direction, cinematography etc, but the storyline is pretty average. It's adapted from a graphic novel, so you can understand where it's coming from, and I did like the ending, but overall, from what I'd heard, I expected more somehow. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - probably the best so far, but you can really tell that they had to cut heaps. The graveyard scene wasn't quite scary enough, and I feel kinda wrong perving on Emma Watson (well, not that wrong... she's 16 in less than a month... that's ok, right?). Overall, I just never get the right feeling from these movies for some reason. The Family Stone - Funnier than I expected. I actually really enjoyed this movie. Anyone with a family should be able to see the funny side. Plus any movie with Rachel McAdams in it is a winner in my book. I think she's gorgeous, and an awesome actor to boot. And not on the plane, I finally got around to seeing Wedding Crashers. I wasn't expecting much from this movie, which may be why I liked it (plus once again, it starts Ms McAdams... grrrr). I think the Comedy Mafia is doing a good job of making solid comedies, pretty much based around an interesting idea and then just using their comedic talents. They are nothing ground breaking, but quite funny. If I could be a bird, I think I'd be a penguin, because then I could walk around on two feet with a lot of other guys like me. |

See I love Unbreakable - it was the first M Night Shaylaman I saw and I reckon it was by far the best, although 6th Sense is certainly a very close second.
I went and saw Syriana two weeks ago (first movie in ages) - very good film I highly recommend it. ![]() ![]() ![]() 'Suck it Reds' - PPS Kevin |

I know I'm totally alone in the world, but I actually thought the 'twist' in 6th sense ruined the movie. I thought up until then it was a really interesting story about the relationship between the two, and what the kid had to do to come to terms with his gift. To me the twist was just like a gimmick strapped on the end to be shocking... like "tada!!! look how clever I am!!" Of course, when I say ruined, I don't really mean ruined. I still liked it. I just didn't think it needed to end that way. dano Wrote:I went and saw Syriana two weeks ago (first movie in ages) - very good film I highly recommend it. I'm hopefully going to see this on the weekend... I've heard it's very good from a few people now. pdwa Wrote:Issaxs Wrote::oops:  :oops:Quote:(well, not that wrong... she's 16 in less than a month... that's ok, right?). I have also been hearing good things about 'V for Vendetta' - which is a huge relief for me. Those comics are among my all time favs. ACT Pressganger (Currently in Canada) The 5 Rules of pg5 1. I guess when you work from good source material you have to work hard to stuff it up (although I realise that it is entirely possible, and has been done in the past). M Night Shaylaman has now got this massive reputation of having a 'twist' in his films - I reckon his next film won't have a 'twist'. That's the 'twist' I do agree that it was a great study of the relationship between the two main characters and the 'twist' almost totally changed the feel of the movie. ![]() ![]() ![]() 'Suck it Reds' - PPS Kevin |
